Are they wearing swords? She appears to have a bright pink scabard. He has a black scabard on his left hand side and the hilt is hidden underneath his scarf. Some sort of religious tomfoolery, I guess.
This street scene has been captured very well. The main focus of the image is unobstructed allowing them to walk out of the frame. The two main characters stand out from the crowd, not only because of their ethnocultural ceremonial dress but also their engaging demeanour. It was refreshing to see them as they quickly made their way through the people on London's busy South Bank (I was further along the walkway when I saw them but didn't manage to get a photo).
My attention is also taken to the man behind the main characters. What is the expression on his face? Is he smiling or laughing in mockery or simply grimacing against the freezing temperature? We don't know. His expression is ambiguous.
This reminds me of an image by Jeff Wall called Mimic (1982) where the viewer is left with no ambiguity. It is a reconstruction of an incident highlighting the racial tension within society. Wall's technique is to recreate everyday events he witnesses himself.
